NMAM Institute of Technology, Nitte

Engineering was started by human beings to make life comfortable. As the world developed, the Engineering field witnessed various challenges. Engineering education in India has seen tremendous growth over the past decade, both in the number of students and the number of colleges. Every year, around 13to 15 million Indians enter the workforce while less than six million jobs are created. Why it is difficult for half of the population to find a job? The answer lies in the curriculum because machines are taking over jobs in this age of 3D printers, Robotics and Artificial Intelligence.

A lot of the engineering colleges do not provide necessary inputs on required skillset to the students because of which employability of the graduates suffer. Even though basic engineering disciplines continue to be indispensable, good communication skills and required computing skills become very critical for the success. The ability to interpret mathematical equations and understand scientific concepts are just some of the skills that engineers require to come out with a proper solution to a problem.

NMAM Institute of Technology (NMAMIT) Nitte established in 1986 aims at connecting and transforming the potential of individuals across the diverse spectrum. NMAMIT offers Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Research programmes in seven disciplines of engineering viz: Biotechnology, Civil, Computer Science, Electrical & Electronics, Electronics & Communication, Information Science and Mechanical. The specializations in the Postgraduate (MTech) programme include Computer Science &Engineering, Construction Technology, Digital Electronics & Communication, Energy Systems, Machine Design, Power Electronics, Structural Engineering and VLSI Design & Embedded Systems. The institute also offers 2-year MCA and MBA programmes. Many departments of the institute have been recognized as Research Centres for offering PhD programmes under VTU.

The institute practices outcome-based education since 2014 with state-of-the-art laboratories and other supporting facilities to provide an enhanced learning environment. The institute boasts of well-qualified teaching faculty with rich research, teaching and industrial experience. The institute conducts Audit courses and special courses on advanced topics regularly to bridge the gap between the curriculum and the need of the industry.

The institute routinely revises the curriculum every year based on the inputs from faculty, industrial experts& students and offers a large variety of Electives to students across seven different branches of Engineering. Continuous efforts are being made to align the courses with industry needs by introducing trending topics like Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning as part of the curriculum. To create awareness about the recent trends in engineering, various technical associations/societies regularly organize seminars and workshops. These programs support the knowledge pool of the students and align them with recent technological trends.

Many of the courses that are taught havepractical components which provide hands-on experience to work on real-time challenging projects. This builds confidence in students to study and experiment with new technologies and tools. Foreign languages- Japanese &French are taught at NMAMIT under the credit-based course, which equip students to take up jobs in foreign countries.

Infrastructure
The classrooms, laboratories, research centres and other academic activities are spread in 7 different buildings with a total built-up area of 11 lac sq ft in a very sophisticated manner. The institute is equipped with over 100 classrooms, 9 tutorial rooms, 66 laboratories, 2 workshops, 1 open-air auditorium, 5 AC seminar halls, 300 staff cabins, 1500 desktop computers, 11 hostel blocks, a guest house, 55 staff quarters and other basic facilities for day-to-day activities of the institute.

Institute has 11 Centres of Excellence under the Departments of Mechanical, Electrical, Biotechnology, Computer Science and Basic Sciences. About 120 research scholars are working in 10 different VTU research centres of the college. During the calendar year 2019, 153 Scopus indexed and 48 Web of Science indexed papers have been published by the faculty members. As many as 68 MoUs and agreements have been signed over the last few years with Govt. organizations, R&D centers, Universities and Industries.

Placements
The Department of Counselling, Student Welfare, Training & Placement (Team Abhyuday) is vibrant in its activities and sees an NMAMITian as a cheerful, healthy, articulate, enthusiastic team player, socially-ecologically conscious, ethically upright, technically competent, a universal citizen who is eminently employable. It has a qualified and experienced Mental Health Professional heading the department, a full-time Placement Executive, departmental faculty coordinators, student volunteers, trained and committed departmental staff dedicated to working for the students’ overall well being. Team Abhyuday, does everything possible through various inputs, participatory activities spread throughout the student’s stay in the college. The department helps those in need directly or by utilizing tangible and intangible resources available with peers, senior students, distinguished alumni, industry mentors, enthusiastic faculty, friends of NMAMIT, library & the internet, to prepare the students to this competitive world. Students with personal problems are assisted to resolve or minimize their problems through consistent supportive therapeutic help. They are assisted even after they leave the campus.

NMAMIT has an impressive placement record of over 80 well-known companies assisting in placements, annually and 150+ companies providing industrial exposure/internships to students. As much as 5-10% of the students pursue higher studies in the country or outside, preparing for it while on campus.

The Placement Department has a transparent procedure and follows a policy of permitting only those students who have very good academic scores to go for a ‘Dream’ or ‘Core’ option, once placed in a service-based company that recruits people in large numbers. This is shared with students as they enter the campus as freshmen. Many choose to make consistent efforts to achieve academic proficiency. A student with 8.25 CGPA, selected by a large recruiter is permitted to apply for a ‘Dream’ or ‘Core’ company and once selected by a core company, he foregoes the previous offer and remains with the Dream company. While this has been a rule, in 2016, keeping with the times, the institute made amendments, to include very prestigious brands as ‘Super Dream’. A student selected by a Dream Company becomes eligible for a ‘Super Dream’ company if he clears a series of tests and interviews in college.

Collaborations
The institute is recognized as a nodal centre for the distance education programme of the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS), ISRO, Dehradun for its outreach programmes. The Institute has active MoUs for research and project collaborations with Penn State University USA, Makerere University Uganda, Erasmus University Netherlands, Ritsumeikan University Japan and the National University of Singapore. In 2019-20, the institute established collaborations with 5 Japanese organizations ie., AIBOD, Yokogawa Electric, Nidec, JTEKT and Kobayashi Create for student internship and training. These internships get converted to placements, after the training period. 14 students of NMAMIT are presently undergoingpre-placement internship / training in Japan.NMAMIT plans to set-up Centres of Excellence in the campusnext year, in collaboration with these industries.
